That's an interesting point. At the last two web app companies where I worked, we had no technical writers. The theory was that if you make the software intuitive, you don't need technical writers. With web apps, change is so swift that the writers would struggle to keep the docs current. I was once a technical writer. I think they have value for complex software that cannot easily be made intuitive and doesn't change a lot ... like say SpaceX sw.
